Comrade Alex's 64 of the 50 Greatest Films Since the Revolution

Films 51 - 60

51. Rashomon 1950

Based on the famous novel of the same name, Rashomon is one of Kurosawa’s best works. The film revolves around one story told three separate ways, check it out and see whose story you believe.

52. Better off Dead 1985

Savage Steve Holland was one of the 80s greatest assets bringing us films like One Crazy Summer, How I got into college and this gem Better Off Dead. I would also like to note that the fact that this is Stacey the red’s favorite all time movie has no bearing on its appearance on my list. None whatsoever. I swear I wasn’t influenced at all. None. At. All.

53. The Getaway 1972

It seems like the 70’s was defined by a healthy combination of Steve McQueen and flying bullets. Nuff said, go watch it.

54. Sneakers 1992

I didn’t expect to put this movie on my greatest films list. But there it was, stuck in the corner of my head. Great cast, excellent writing, wonderful ensemble performances and hell of a little spy thriller to boot. Voila, it appears on the list. Evidently I’m a big Redford fan.

55. Uncorked 1998

The script for this film is almost as charming as Minnie Driver herself. The quirky storyline is only slightly overshadowed by the even quirkier performances of its big leads. Of other notable interest is that this was Sir Nigel Hawthorne’s last performance. He picked a memorable one.

Sid Note: I'll point this out as Comrade Alex is a fastidious fact checker - I think Nigel Hawthore had major roles in at least three films after this one.

56. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969

Two men versus the Bolivian Army. Redford and Newman will always be Butch and Sundance to men. I deem this film the ultimate Buddy Movie and let no other put it asunder.

Sid Note: This is one of, if not my favorite film.  What charm these two guys have, and Catherine Ross is lovely.  George Roy Hill's direction is fantastic, as is the cinematography.  Can you think of a film with more great one-liners?

57. The Party 1968

Did you say you wanted to see Peter Sellers play a lone Indian gentlemen attending a swinging 60’s party. Oh okay. We got that. Oh, you say you want Blake Edwards to reunite with his Pink Panther star and direct this movie, we got that too.

58. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso 1989

I’m going to expose my soft underbelly for a moment. This movie got me all teary eyed. From Italian director Giuseppe Tornatorre comes a film for anyone who loves films. Ciao.

59. Hardboiled (Lashou shentan) 1992

Let’s use our college logic class for a moment shall we. If Sam Peckinpah equals Violence then John Woo equals slow motion violence. Chow yun fat stars as Tequila a cop on the edge that can do any job, he’s a tough cop with heart of gold – oh yeah this should have had Oscar written all over it. Stupid academy bastards!

60. Taxi Driver 1976

You recommending me. There’s no other movie here. You must be recommending me.
