My daughter Erin and my son-in-law Mike drove all the way from Jacksonville, Florida to spend the holidays with us. They brought their dog. This dog is a yard long and gets around on three-inch legs. Her name is Lily and she is a Welsh corgi.
Lily has always intrigued me because of her ears. In our collection of unwanted wild pets here at the Living Materials Center, we have two African Fennec foxes. The largest things on their bodies are their ears. In the hot African desert these ears work as radiators to cool the blood. Although Lily belongs to the same animal family, I just think she can hear pretty well. Compare the two photos and the resemblance is remarkable!
I have narrowed my list of New Years Resolutions. Promises are debts unpaid, so as not to be in arrears, I just call them plans.
I will refrain from trying to grab any more fleeing adult raccoons by the nape of the neck.
I will now always check the bowl before hitting the handle on the flush sink in our food preparation area. Thank goodness that turtle was too big to go down!
I will pay more attention to my morning routine and not pour coffee on my dry cereal.
I will try to get along with grownups a little better. After working with kids and animals for thirty years, adults make me nervous.
I will remove the sign in my office that says, “The more people I meet, the more I like rattlesnakes!”
I will replace it with a sign that says, “Please do not say anything to me about anybody, unless you want it embellished and repeated!”
I will make more of an effort to get along with dogs. Their behavior is not their fault.
I will remove my bumper sticker that says, “WASTE OF INK! If you tailgate, you probably can’t read either!”
I will continue my lifelong campaign against keeping wild animals as pets, even though when dressing this morning, for the first time in my life, I put my billfold in my right hip pocket and did not figure out why I was uncomfortable until half way to work.
I’ve pretty well blown the rest of my plans already. After all, it has been eight hours!
Well, gotta go now because I am on my way to the Cotton Bowl to cheer on my Aggies. I bought a new cap and everything. Happy New Year.
