The Backyard Zoo

"Thankful"

I usually do my evening exercise walk around the neighborhood. Last night the weather was nippy enough to put a wrinkle in my polyester, so I traveled to the mall. The festive decorations made me ask, "Are we just going to skip Thanksgiving?" I did not see a cardboard turkey, a picture of a Native American or a pilgrim, not even a pumpkin! I guess marketing can’t figure how to sell mass quantities of something, so we slide from Halloween right into Christmas. The photo is of Lawrence, our resident rooster. He is poultry so I figured close enough. Lawrence is thankful for turkeys.

As my favorite actor once said, "Well listen up pilgrim," I cannot presume to tell you what you should be thankful for, therefore I made a partial list for myself: I am thankful for being vertical and taking in air, getting paid for my hobby, a government by the people, etc., the ability to read, teachers, people who answer phones, navel oranges, my Aggies Scott and Erin, shirts with tails that don’t have to be tucked in, administrators who stay in their offices, a window beside my bed, and people who drive the exact same way I do.

I am thankful for the automatic flush in public restrooms, two cats to pet anytime I want, the pull-tabs on coffee cans, intermittent windshield wipers, Tammy-office manager extraordinare, being able to work with the most wonderful people in the world, Crankshaft, and a warm comfy house with indoor plumbing.

I am thankful my daughter lives in Hawaii and I have a free place to stay when I visit, digital cameras, all my teeth with no cavities, left-turn lanes, my wife Peggy, loose clothes, twist spouts on orange juice cartons, women for whom hair cut is not an option, and for poets:

"For the homes that with purest affection are blest,
For the season of plenty and well-deserved rest,
For our country extending from sea unto sea;
The land that is known as the "Land of the Free" --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!" (Author unknown)

Enjoy the family this holiday, eat entirely too much, be appreciative, and be thankful.
